The FIDO Alliance is making good progress at assembling the technologies required for the adoption of passkeys, and some companies, including 1PAssword, have already started using them, Shiner said. He said they are "better for security" and "easier for humans" than passwords, and in the business, they benefit customers as well as the sales and security departments.
In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2023, Shiner also discusses:
- The need to educate people about passkeys, why they should adopt them and, especially, why they are safe;
- The factors to consider in deciding when to adopt passkeys;
- The need to "be where the people are" because passwords and passkeys will be hybrid "for quite a while";
Since joining 1Password in 2012, Shiner has grown the company from 20 people to a 900-employee global organization with a $6.8 billion valuation. Prior to 1Password, he held leadership roles at IBM Canada and Rosetta and has a demonstrated history of growing technology companies. Shiner currently serves on the board of directors of GenomOncology and speaks at events such as Web Summit, Collision and the C100.
