Why Resilience Is More Than Just Cybersecurity

Paul Peters on Strengthening Cybersecurity for SMEs and Micro-Businesses
Paul Peters, detective superintendent and managing director, Cyber Resilience Center for Wales

Double-extortion ransomware attacks are a troubling trend in the cyberthreat landscape, and the fallout from such attacks underscores the need for cyber resilience, particularly for smaller organizations, said Paul Peters, detective superintendent and managing director at the Cyber Resilience Center for Wales.

"Resilience is more than just cybersecurity," said Peters whose role at the center is to help organizations enhance cyber resilience, focusing on SMBs, micro-businesses and third-sector organizations. The center collaborates with the National Cyber Security Center, Microsoft and other organizations to disseminate best practices and guidance to the business community.

"We are there to talk to all organizations and get them to put measures in place to improve their cyber resilience. And if you are a big organization and have a mature cyber resilience posture, we're there to be signposted to your supply chain, which is an avenue of attacks," he said.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at Infosecurity Europe 2024, Peters discussed:

  • The mission and focus of the Cyber Resilience Center for Wales;
  • The importance of reporting incidents to law enforcement to enhance information sharing;
  • How organizations can deploy basic security measures to prepare for and mitigate cyberthreats.

Peters has more than 25 years of experience in policing and a background in investigating and preventing cybercrime. He has worked closely with businesses to raise awareness of cyberthreats, in efforts involving education, awareness and law enforcement support across Wales.
