"If you think about general principles around management of or responsible use of the data, we've been pretty much responsible for a very long time within a privacy department or privacy function. So the focus comes back to privacy itself," Samtani said.

"There are certainly larger organizations which can potentially have the resources for a dedicated AI team, AI governance, AI officer and everything else. But for most of the small-to-medium enterprises, or even into large organizations generally, it would be the privacy team as the first responsible."

Samtani outlined a multifaceted approach for organizations to implement AI, focusing on cross-functional collaboration early in project development and advocating for a structured governance framework to ensure compliance and mitigate risks.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, Samtani discussed;

  • The importance of cross-functional collaboration between DPOs, legal teams and AI developers;
  • The opportunities for generative AI to enhance privacy programs;
  • The evolving regulatory landscape around AI.

Samtani, a privacy leader with a background in data security, privacy and data protection, formerly served as global privacy manager for Qantas Group, which includes Qantas Airlines, Jetstar Airlines and Qantas Loyalty.
