Regulations and Threats: Adapting to the Landscape

From zero-day exploits to IoT vulnerabilities to the sheer number of prospective adversaries, the threat landscape is ever-shifting. And global regulatory pressures are only mounting. How must security leaders respond? Symantec's Renault Ross offers insight.

Ross, the Chief Cybersecurity Business Strategist for Symantec Americas Strategic Programs, says organizations need to build their response upon a foundation of heightened security awareness.

"Honestly, it comes down to having a very strong user awareness program in place," Ross says. "No amount of software security can fix the person. You can patch a system, but you can't patch a person.

But organizations also need strong knowledge of emerging regulations such as Europe's General Data Protection Regulation; an understanding of NIST's cybersecurity framework; and familiarity with emerging technology trends such as cloud access security brokers.

In an interview about the shifting threat and regulatory landscape, Ross discusses:

  • Where organizations are most vulnerable to today's top threats;
  • New, global regulatory pressures;
  • CASB and other solutions to improve response.

Ross is a Distinguished Engineer and serves as the Chief Cybersecurity Business Strategist for North America. In this role, Ross leads information security and privacy thought-leadership discussions and strategies, increasing Symantec's presence in public and private sector. Ross represents Symantec as a conference keynote speaker, State Senate expert witness providing testimonies along with CxO briefings around the country on security best practices. His expertise lies in enterprise security management, virtualization and cloud.
