Increasingly, cyber attackers are molding technology and human intelligence into blended threats that prey upon vulnerable defenses. Chester Wisniewski of Sophos lays out how organizations can become more mature in preparedness and response.

Wisniewski, a principal research scientist at Sophos, has been tracking for some months now the shift in skilled cyber attackers toward schemes that involve blended threats.

"The more talented end of the spectrum are separating themselves from the masses and kind of moving forward like criminal penetration testers," he says. "Sadly, most organizations aren't very well prepared to defend themselves against a human adversary."

In an interview about the evolution of blended threats, Wisniewski discusses:

  • Attack trends he's seeing;
  • Why blended attacks are now such a significant threat;
  • How organizations of all sizes can better detect and deter these attacks.

Wisniewski is a principal research scientist in the Office of the CTO at Sophos. He's been a featured speaker at RSA, Infosecurity Europe, LISA, USENIX, Virus Bulletin and many Security BSides events around the world in addition to regularly consulting with NPR, CNN, CBC, The New York Times other media outlets.
