Detecting Payroll Fraud With Data Analytics

Data analytics can play a critical role in detecting payroll fraud, says Kelly Paxton, a fraud examiner and private investigator.

"Data analytics can throw a bunch of needles in a haystack ... and help you to quickly spot the outliers," Paxton says in an interview with Information Security Media Group.

In this interview (see audio link below photo), Paxton also discusses:

  • How to spot "ghost" employees;
  • How tools for spotting payroll fraud have evolved;
  • Why data analytics plays an important role.

Paxton is principal at K Paxton LLC, based in Oregon. She has more than 13 years of law enforcement experience. Paxton started her career in law enforcement as a special agent for U.S. Customs' Office of Investigations, investigating white-collar fraud, money laundering and narcotics cases. She also worked as a contract investigator, completing over 1,000 security background investigations for the Office of Personnel Management and Department of Homeland Security.
