Hosting Company Breach Affects 40,000Irish Firm Says E-mail Addresses, Phone Numbers Compromised
Irish domain registrar and hosting company Blacknight has fallen victim to a security breach affecting up to 40,000 customers' contact details, such as e-mail addresses and telephone numbers.
In a statement posted to the company's blog, Blacknight says that no financial data had been compromised as a result of the data breach. The Jan. 31 incident was the result of an external compromise, the company explains. "Blacknight is investigating the issue further and taking appropriate steps to prevent a re-occurrence of the issue," according to the statement.
The company is recommending that users update their passwords for Blacknight.com and stay alert for any unusual online account activity.
Blacknight has notified Dataprotection.ie (Office of the Data Protection Commissioner of Ireland) and Iriss.ie (Irish Reporting and Information Security Service) about the incident.
