But it is imperative that C-suite leaders of organizations understand the benefits of harnessing the technology with thorough research and development, as well as the risks associated with AI, to put up voluntary guardrails in the absence of comprehensive regulation.

Companies have been using large language models, the building blocks of generative AI, for several years in areas such as fraud detection, risk assessment and personalization. But the advent of more broadly applicable tools such as ChatGPT has made executives more aware of their existence and spurred vendors into creation mode, said Troy Leach, vice president of Strategy at the Cloud Security Alliance.

"When cloud computing first came out, it provided people without resources accessibility to massive data center-level quality of compute power. We're going to get the same thing with AI. Everything is going to be AI as a service," Leach said.

In this interview with Information Security Media Group, Leach also discussed:

  • How fintechs can leverage large language models and mitigate their security risks;
  • Navigating the new and evolving regulatory landscape;
  • Upcoming generative AI use cases in the cloud and fintech space;

Leach has spent more than 25 years educating on and advocating for the advancement of responsible technology to improve the quality of living and parity for all. He helped establish the PCI Security Standards Council, which creates global standards and certification programs, and served as CTO and chief standards architect. He also sits on several advisory boards as an expert in information security and financial payments.
