Fortinet: The Evolving Threat Landscape of 2023
FortiGuard Labs Vice President Derek Manky on Global Rise in Targeted AttacksCybercriminals are becoming increasingly innovative and shifting toward more targeted and destructive attacks, using wiper malware, which was previously only used by APT-focused, nation-state actors. Also, ransom payment demands are reaching seven to eight figures.

These trends are part of Fortinet's 2023 Global Ransomware Report, which found that while 78% of organizations believe they are well-prepared for ransomware attacks, over 50% of them still fall victim to at least one attack.
Aligning with RSA's theme for 2023, "Stronger Together," Fortinet has been "driving public-private partnerships" and "creating an ecosystem to fight cybercrime and mitigate risk," said Derek Manky, chief security strategist and vice president of global threat intelligence at Fortinet's FortiGuard Labs. Fortinet is also collaborating with Interpol and MITRE to address cyber-related issues.
In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2023, Manky also discusses:
- The need for business partnerships to combat cybercrime;
- How OT systems are increasingly vulnerable and easy targets for cyberattacks;
- The potential of AI-driven security operations.
Manky has more than 20 years of cybersecurity experience and has established frameworks in the security industry, including responsible vulnerability disclosure, which has led to the responsible reporting of over 1,000 zero-day vulnerabilities.
