Clothing Retailer Reports Data Breach

Sheplers, a western-wear retailer based in Frisco, Texas, says the company's payment systems have been breached by hackers who gained access to some of its customers' payment card information.

The breach potentially impacts customers who used payment cards at Sheplers' retail locations between June 11 and Sept. 4, the company says. So far, it's not believed that the breach affected Sheplers' online web store. In addition, there's no evidence that debit card PINs were compromised.

Sheplers is working with a leading computer security firm, in cooperation with law enforcement, to investigate the incident.

Impacted information includes names, credit and debit card account numbers and expiration dates, Sheplers says.

"The security of our customers' information is extremely important to us," the retailer says. "When we first received an informal tip from a financial institution suggesting the possibility of a breach, we hired a leading computer security firm to conduct a thorough investigation and suspended all electronic processing of payment cards for sales at our retail store locations until we could determine whether customer information was at risk."

The retailer says it's implemented new security measures and has resumed the processing of payment cards at its stores.

Sheplers is offering impacted customers free fraud protection services through AllClear ID for one year, a spokesperson confirmed to Information Security Media Group.
